Braithwaite & Co. Limited (BCL), established in India in 1913 and nationalized in 1976, is a ‘Miniratna-I’ Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) under the Ministry of Railways. Originally incorporated in the UK in 1884, BCL has a rich legacy in manufacturing and engineering excellence. With two manufacturing units in and around Kolkata and offices across India, it is a profit-making entity that achieved its highest-ever revenue in 2023-24.

BCL serves as the ‘Prototype Hub’ for developing new-design wagons for Indian Railways and actively undertakes Overhaul & Maintenance (O&M) activities at railway workshops. Its core competencies include manufacturing wagons, cranes, bridges, and containers, while also expanding into civil, infrastructure, and solar projects. The company’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Welding is accredited by CGSC and supported by NSDC. With a legacy that includes fabricating the iconic Howrah Bridge, BCL is currently executing projects in 15 states across India.

With a rich 110-year legacy, BCL has contributed to India's infrastructure through landmark projects such as heavy structural steel bridges, port cranes, and power plant equipment. Post-nationalization in 1976, we focused on manufacturing railway freight wagons, cranes, and bridges. Today, as a Miniratna-I PSU under the Ministry of Railways, BCL has emerged as a Prototype Hub, designing and developing innovative wagons to meet evolving freight transportation needs. Expanding beyond traditional products, we now manufacture stainless steel structures, road and foot over bridges, ship-launching cradles, and ISO containers. Our state-of-the-art facilities include Industry 4.0-compliant machinery, a steel foundry, NABL-certified laboratories, and a skilled workforce.

Diversification into services like crane and wagon overhauls, railway workshop operations, and turnkey projects has strengthened our national presence.
